Did you know that about 1/3 of all food produced in our world is wasted? Imagine all the energy, water, land, and emissions we could save by simply learning to organize ourselves better! Todays area to tackle: the fridge.

Where do I Store Items To Make Them Last Longer?
Storing fresh herbs: Fresh herbs do best in the upper shelves of your fridge in glass jars with water. Doing this prevents wilting and helps them to last longer.
Fruits + Vegetables: Fruits and veggies do best when divided into crisper drawers. If you have more than one drawer dividing them into each is ideal.“As fruit ripens it produces ethylene, which can speed up the ripening of other produce, even causing some to rot or sprout” -orgain.com
Condiments: Condiments do best when you place them in your fridge doors. Since your fridge doors are the warmest section of your fridge they are ideal for ketchup, mustard, pasta sauces, salad dressing, etc.
Leafy Greens: This is definitely one of my biggest struggles, but storing greens towards the back of your fridge in a damp paper towel will keep them fresh and crisp for longer!
Things That Don't Need To Be Refrigerated
There are many things in your fridge that can be left out! The last thing you want is a cluttered fridge that works hard all day wasting energy and is a barrier in allowing you to really see what you have. Here are a few things that can be kept at room temperature:
- tomatoes - squash
- potatoes - avocado,
- garlic. - olive oil
- onions - coffee
- pumpkin - melon
- sweet potatoes
General Tips:
Don't overcrowd: Overcrowding is one of the number one causes for losing leftovers in the back of the fridge - at least for me it is. By keeping your fridge clutter free you have more space to really see what you have and plan your meals more effectively.
Clean... often: By cleaning often you prevent the contamination of bacteria and other nasties on your produce. Make sure when you clean you use a natural solution as chemical cleaners can also contaminate your food. A simple diy 50/50 vinegar mix will work great!
Buy less + shop more frequently: While yes this does contradict going to the store and wasting time and energy it is a great way to avoid rotten produce and pasta sauce from
who-knows-when In the back of the fridge!
With this info I know that your fridge will become a much cleaner, tidier space that reduces stress AND food waste!
