Covid-19 has limited travelling most definitely, but it is a great opportunity to explore your own country and area! Here are a few tips that I've learned on my recent road trip.

Travelling is one of my favourite things to do and is what brings me the most joy in life. Since starting my sustainable journey just over a year ago I have never travelled, and so when going on a road trip this summer I knew I wanted to make as low waste and eco friendly as I possible could. Through that experience there were MANY ups and downs and there were a ton of tips I learned along the way!

Remember to take what is accessible for your situation and simply leave the rest.

Food: Pack some but not too too much. I noticed that I prepared a TON of food before my trip, but eating what I’d made wasn’t always the convenient option! I stopped once a day to get something to eat for breakfast, because I was on the road so quick even what I packed wasn't a good option. I definitely recommend packing enough food, but really looking at what is realistic for your situation.

Packing: When packing I recommend taking versatile pieces and accessories! That way you can rewear, rewear, and rewear again! This trip was only a few days so I packed two outfits which were both interchangeable with each other. this gave me more room to experiment while I was there and rehear something I already had. With toiletries, try packing your own to avoid travel sizes at hotels. I personally found it so easy to grab my couple shower products, oral care essentials, and hair ties rather than relying on what was there. Plus who knows what was even in what they offer as most shampoo and conditioners are packed with chemicals.

Shopping: I went into my trip thinking “buying less” would be my biggest challenge... but honestly it was the easiest. If you want a souvenir try finding local creators and shops. I was able to find a local art gallery where I found a beautiful ceramic dish and some other goodies. Almost everywhere you go you can find some sort of local shop. This not only supports the environment, but also the local community!

Other tips: ditch the idea of perfectionism, consider carbon offsets (if that’s an option for you), experiment with flight-free travel when you can, try eating as plant based as possible, and carry your habits with you! For example... take shorter showers, turn off lights, pack your own water etc.
