Microplastics Hiding In Your Sink

Here's what you need to know and how you can help!

Are microplastics hiding in your sink? Microplastics are a major issue with estimates that in 2014 there were 15 - 51 TRILLION in our oceans. To me this is completely shocking and to be quite honest I really can’t justify to myself what that means or how that looks. That is about 8.3 million single pieces of Microplastics in every cubic metre of the ocean.
I think the biggest issue when it comes to microplastic pollution is that you can’t necessarily see it. Issues that are directly affecting the population and are visible are more likely to have people taking action. Take greenhouse gas emissions, a huge portion of the population isn't concerned about that, yet it's gravely effecting the health of thousands. It’s the rivers indigenous people rely on, the streams that marginalized communities get their water from, and the oceans where biodiversity thrives that is being destroyed due to our unconsciousness.
What I found recently is that your sponge could be part of the problem! Traditional sponges are said to have more bacteria than your toilet seat, plus they are made of polyester and nylon which like clothing, releases microplastics with every. single. wash. That is a double-no!
So what can you do? Switch to a dish brush like this one that is made of compostable materials and educate yourself more on where these “hidden” plastics are really hiding. Knowledge is power! Also implementing changes in other areas that could be producing plastic (clothing, food, health products, etc.) is extremely important in tackling this crisis!
