Most people advise composting for healthy, nutrient-rich soil, however, not many people are in a situation where that option is available. Here are some easy ways to improve your soil quality without compost.

The biggest thing I’ve learned thus far about gardening is that soil quality matters! You can see a significant difference in the quality of your produce if you have quality soil. Once I added in certain key elements and did some testing to ensure my soil was healthy, I noticed my crop production increased and the produce was SO much fresher.
Most people say to use compost as it is rich in nutrients for your plants to thrive… however it is not always an option. Being able to compost at your own home and use that within your garden is a privilege not many come to have. Composting involves a lot of work. I tend to my bin every single day. Whether it's turning the compost, adding more organic matter, or shredding some cardboard... it is a lot of physical labour. It's understandable that not everyone has the opportunity to create their own compost, and that doesn't mean you can't have healthy soil!
That being said, here are a few ways to improve soil quality without composting!
+ Cover weeds: These powerhouses loosen soil structure and enrich garden nutrients!
+ Keep those weeds under control: Take a few minutes every day to go through your garden patches and get rid of those weeds!
+ Crop rotation! Rotate your crops each year to help bring nutrients to all areas of your soil
+ Egg shells/ coffee grounds … recycle these into your garden to feet your plants!

Whatever your situation may be I always encourage you to bring gardening into it. I feel so empowered every single day by watching my own food grow and flourish due to my care. If you have a small space it can be as simple as an herb garden! Whatever it may be, let gardening come into your life.
