From the outside looking in, sustainability can look like a very expensive lifestyle, but in all reality majority of the swaps and things environmentalists do save a TON of money.

Zero waste living is so much more than physical packaging. A lot of people in the zero waste movement look at specifically what is in their garbage, but we have to go beyond. Did you know that companies behind the scenes produce 70x more waste than what's in your can? I think it's important to realize that your individual actions matter, but rethinking what zero waste living really means is extremely important.

I saw a comment once asking why a disposable natural alternative to period products is considered a low waste swap and from the outside looking in it’s an easy question to come to. What we have to understand is that zero waste goes beyond the choice of “landfill or reuse” and to several aspects of sustainability. Listed are 15 ways you can go beyond packaging and still save money:

w a t e r

+ eat a plant-based meal

+ buy less

+ ditch fast fashion

+ use your pasta water to feed your plants!!

+ run your dishwasher and laundry machine ONLY when its full

+ turn off water when not in use (when brushing your teeth, lathering your hands)

+ catch your waste water!! I put a bucket in the shower so when it’s heating up I can catch the water, you can also place buckets outside when it rains!

e n e r g y

+ buy less

+ ditch fast fashion

+ turn off/unplug anything that's not in use

+ air dry your clothing!! Dryers are complete energy hogs

+ Wrap or cover foods and drinks in the refrigerator (When foods release moisture they make the compressor work harder to keep the unit cold.)

l a n d

+ avoid bottled water, palm oil, and other plastics when possible

+ eat a plant-based meal

+ use public transportation or walk/bike!

If you practice zero waste living I encourage you to look deeper into what that term can mean in your lifestyle. Maybe you can incorporate more plant based meals into your lifestyle... great! Maybe you are able to air dry your clothes... amazing! And maybe you have a few mason jars and buckets lying around to catch rainfall... that is incredible! All of these small actions - collectively - have a major positive impact.
